Welcome to our February Newsletter.

ROADS CLOUSURE – 5th to 11th MARCH 2025

There will be micro-surfacing preparation works in Connaught Road, Elliswick Road and Browning Road from Wednesday 5th March to Tuesday 11th March (subject to weather etc) from 7:30am to 6pm. Therefore, vehicles may not be allowed access through the road closure during the works. For more information, please contact 08442253336. During this period, if you must access the club by car, please allow extra time to find alternative parking.

CLUB TOURNAMENT – CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES MONDAY 3rd MARCH 2025

The sign-up sheets for each category are available on the notice board in the clubhouse for those members wishing to enter. If you are unable to sign up at the clubhouse, please send an email to our Tournament Secretary, Louise Behan at [email protected]. The closing date for entries is Monday 3rd March 2025. Please make sure that you sign up by this date as late entries will not be accepted.

The draw will be published on 8th March 2025 with the commencement of matches from 9th March 2025.

MEMBERSHIP:

The 2-month renewal period ends today, Friday, 28th February. All spare places will now be offered out to the people on the waiting list, in strict chronological order.

Please ensure that ALL members fill in ALL their personal details in their LTA Advantage account.

CLUBHOUSE AND GROUNDS:

  • Luminance Pro have repaired the intermittent fault on the floodlight nearest the clubhouse, replacing the contactor in the service pillar. They have also repaired the lock on the switch control box.
  • The removal of the Beech tree at the entrance to the club left a very uneven pavement area outside. The council have committed to repair and resurface it. It is intended that once the ground has settled, the entrance will be widened.

 TEAM TENNIS:

All the winter matches are still progressing. We are looking forward to the summer matches. We have many opportunities for members to participate in team tennis in the summer months, including the Datchworth league, Mixed Friendlies, Ladies Friendlies, Hot Rackets, Mens National and Herts League. If you would like to play team tennis, please do not hesitate to register your interest by contacting our respective captains as follows:

SOCIALS:

In February, we had a fabulous fun night with Ross and Vikki’s Live Music event, during which members danced the night away!  Thank you to Ross and Vikki for another fantastic night!

21st – First Bank Holiday Tournament. Supper Nights – Thursday evenings, once a month, starting on Thursday 17th April to 11th September.

Members and their family are welcome to join us for a delicious supper cooked by some of our generous and talented members. We are still looking for members who are interested in cooking for one of our famous supper nights on the following dates:  12th June and 11th September.  These dates can be altered to suit, but obviously need to be on a Thursday evening after club mix-in night.

Please also note – Change of date for Lulu and the Hulaballoos Jazz Night.  This will now be on Saturday 8th November 2025.

Finally, Retired Tennis Player, commentator and Strictly contestant Annabel Croft has a show at the Eric Morecambe Centre on Saturday 15 November ‘From Tennis Balls to Glitter Balls’. Jane will be sending around a sign-up for members interested in attending this event shortly.

JUNIORS

Herts National League

This year we have entered 3 teams in the above league. Teams are as follows:

U12 Boys – Captain Kelly Newton-Batchelor

U14 Boys – Captain David Brocklebank

U16 Boys – Captain Paul Lucas

FRIDAY 25TH APRIL – THE START OF THE JUNIOR NIGHTS – FREE TO JUNIOR MEMBERS

These are run by our wonderful coaches and we would love to see as many juniors as possible attending the Junior Nights and having a lot of fun.

  • 4:30pm to 6pmfor Primary School age (must have a parent present for supervision)
  • 6pm to 8pmfor Secondary School age (an adult volunteer needed each week to supervise).

There will be a tuck shop for the juniors and the bar will be open (we need a volunteer to run it) for the adults and hopefully it will be the start of many Friday evenings of basking in the sunshine.

SUNDAY 29th JUNE 2025 – JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

With reserve date of Sunday 6th July. Please reserve in your diary – details will follow nearer to the time. This year, the tournament is organised by parents, please let us know if you are able to help with the organisation.

 CHARITY

From mid-March until Easter, Harpenden Lions Club will be running their annual Charity Raffle for a Giant Easter Egg. This year’s charity is SERV Herts and Beds. SERV (Service by Emergency Response Volunteers) are Blood Runners and part of a nationwide voluntary organisation providing a free out of hours delivery service for blood products and patient samples, as well as Human Donor Milk, medical equipment and drugs. They provide a vital service to the main hospitals in our region, as well as Hospices and Milk Banks.  They operate 24/7, 365 days per year and are funded by donations.  Registered charity 1180326.
