Elliswick LTC Newsletter – February 2021

Dear Members,

Welcome to our February Newsletter. Firstly, a very warm welcome to our new members who have just joined the club. To those who have left the club, you will no longer receive any correspondence from us from the 1st March.

We are pleased to inform you that, following Government and LTA guidelines, we will reopen the courts for our members to use from 29th March.  However, please follow the Government guidelines to minimise the risk of spreading the Covid-19 virus by avoiding close contact with anyone you do not live with and wash or sanitise your hands regularly. We will forward you more detailed guidelines from the LTA when they have been published.

The 2021 Annual Club Tournament

The Committee is in discussion about a possible delay to this year’s tournament (finals day perhaps in October 2021). Dates are to be confirmed.  We will send you more detailed information once we have finalised the dates.

Grounds & Clubhouse
We believe that we have eliminated the creases behind court 2 and part of court 1. The surface needed to be stretched flat with a specialist machine.  We will keep an eye on it as we go into next winter, the season when the problem tends to occur.

Courts 4-7 have been rejuvenated and re-sanded. We are still concerned at the drainage and dirt that comes out when the courts are wet. We are talking to the company to see if they can do anything else.

We have initiated work on a planning application for fixed LED replacement floodlights on courts 5 and 6. This is the first stage in our floodlight upgrade strategy. Any spend on new lights, apart from planning costs, will be voted on at the AGM.

We are replacing the nets on courts 4-7.

Team Tennis

Ladies tennis

Ladies vet winter matches had been abandoned due to Covid-19 restrictions.  We have entered 4 teams into the forthcoming summer Hot Rackets.  If there are any new members or players who would like to be considered for match play, then please do not hesitate to register your interest by contacting Victoria Aitchison at [email protected]

Men’s Tennis

The remainder of the winter men’s vets matches will resume in April 2021.  We have entered 1 team into the Herts National League and have entered 5 teams in to the Herts. League. We will enter 2 teams into the summer Hot Rackets. If any new members or current members who haven’t played in those teams before but are interested in playing and would like to be considered, please email our Men’s Captain, Rupert, at [email protected]

Mixed Team Tennis

The mixed winter league have also been abandoned due to lockdown.  We are looking forward to the Summer Datchworth season. Summer Datchworth match fixtures usually commence in April, running for 14 consecutive Monday evenings.

If anyone would like to play in a mixed team, please do not hesitate to register your interest by contacting Kate Curson at [email protected].

We are finalising the dates of our social events this year and we will inform you the details in due course.

Recycling laptops/tablets

Computer Friendly are recycling laptops/tablets for disadvantaged school children in the St Albans and District Area. Despite the fact that children will be returning to school, we see a continuing need for the devices. For Harpenden, we are asking people to put their devices in a plastic bag together with the charger, passwords and mouse, then come to John Talbot’s house 20 Rosebery Avenue and ring the bell. John will open up the garage door and you can deposit the bag inside. You can call John on 07785 365 367 to discuss timing etc.

Here are instructions for prepare an iPad or iPhone to donate.
