Elliswick LTC Newsletter – February 2022
Dear Members,
Welcome to our February Newsletter.
This has been a great month for us. We received the wonderful news from the Herts LTA that our club has been awarded as the WINNER OF THE CLUB OF THE YEAR category for Hertfordshire. This is a very proud moment for the club and we thank you all for your contributions in achieving this award.
Spring is just around the corner. As social tennis is the backbone of our club, please do try to attend and support our social tennis mornings to improve your game and to socialise with other members (tea/coffee and biscuits/cakes afterwards). Players of all standards are very welcome to join in – just turn up and play. The social tennis mornings are on Tuesdays (Ladies morning), Thursdays (Mix-in), both days starting from 9am, and Saturday and Sunday mornings (Mix-in) from 10am. It would be great to see more of our members joining in our ever-so-friendly social tennis.
Defibrillator
This is to inform you that we have fixed the defibrillator at the club. It is back in service, located just inside the main entrance to the clubhouse.
Club Tournament
The Elliswick Closed Club Championships 2022 will be soon upon us. The entry sign-up sheets are now displayed on the notice board in the club house and the closing date for entry will be Sunday 20th March 2022.
If you are unable to sign up at the club-house, please send an email to our Tournament Secretary, Louise Behan at [email protected].
Clubhouse and Grounds
We have had the floor heating in the clubhouse altered so that it now works properly. Apologies for some cold days, hopefully we have now sorted the problems. We have installed new sensors and thermostats.
We are trying a new approach with planning for the floodlights. We have asked another company to survey and give us some recommendations for a way forward.
Team Tennis
Ladies tennis
Winter Vets matches are still in progress and only a few matches left to play. Well done to all the players and best of luck for the remaining matches.
Ladies Nights – these will start on Wednesday nights after the clocks go forward at the end of March.
Men’s Tennis.
The vets leagues are coming to a close, we still have a few more matches to be played through March and then we will be looking forward to the summer season where we have entered:
5 Herts League Teams
2 Hot Rackets Teams
1 Herts National League Team
A lot of men’s team members will also be representing the club in the mixed Summer Datchworth League on Monday nights.
If you would like to be considered for any of the teams, please contact Rupert directly via email at [email protected]
Men’s night will be starting soon, which we have decided to run as an organised session after great success last year. Dougie Carlean very kindly organised fours each Tuesday night last summer for which we’d like to say a big thank you.
After speaking with some regular attendees from last year and hearing their feedback we will operate 5 courts on an organised fours basis but leave 1 court as a mix in court for people to turn up and play on.
Dougie has offered to get things started again this summer. However doing this on a weekly basis is a big commitment, so we are looking for two or three people who would be happy to share the workload throughout the summer.
If you are keen to help it would be greatly appreciated, please contact Rupert directly to let him know if you would be happy to get involved.
Mixed Team Tennis
Autumn mixed matches are nearing completion with quite a few matches still to play.
We then move into spring Datchworth from April, where we have 3 teams playing. Format 2 men, 1 lady every Monday night home and away.
The 2nd team is needing a new captain. Tony Ward had kindly offered to run this team, but if anyone else wants to express an interest, please let [email protected] know by 6th March and it will go to a vote to those who played in the 2nd team recently.
The Mid Herts Mixed League (mixed friendlies) starts up in late April or early May. For many, it is an introduction to competitive tennis. If you wish to play in these friendly matches, please do not hesitate to contact Andree Haxton at [email protected].
Membership
Thank you to everyone who have paid their membership fees. The deadline for doing so is today, Monday February 28th. If you haven’t yet paid, this is your last chance to do so to avoid your membership expiring.
Socials
Members have been enjoying bacon rolls and some homemade cakes on a Saturday morning. Please continue to support our two teenagers.
The taster stretch class held a few weeks ago was well supported. If anyone is interested in doing a class please contact Sally Radcliffe for details.
Our club nights and our club tournament will start towards the end of March.
Please look at our notice board and the website for events and socials.
Coaching
Members who want to book onto junior courses that are not currently on this term for the summer please email our Head Coach, Ben Wood, for priority booking.
