Elliswick LTC Newsletter – July 2022

Dear Members

Welcome to our July Newsletter.  We hope that you have been enjoying your tennis in the sun at Elliswick LTC. The club has never been busier and it is great to see so many members and their families enjoying the sport.  May the sun continue to shine at Elliswick LTC throughout the year.

Some of the committee members were interviewed by the Herts Living Magazine on the 23rd June. They are going to publish our story in their August edition, so look out for the article!

Lee Evans (Herts LTA President) and Tessa Terry (Herts LTA Welfare Officer) visited our club on Friday the 8th of July to support the junior Ukrainians who are playing tennis at the club. They were all then entertained by magic, music and supper in the clubhouse, the Ukrainian children and their carers also joined in the fun, happily singing Ukrainian songs.

Team Tennis

Mens Tennis

The Herts National League have now concluded. Our team won 2 matches out of 6.  The Herts League and the Hot Rackets matches are still being played.  Both leagues have involved some of our junior members to play in their teams. We are looking forward to play in the winter vets (45’s, 55’s and 65’s). If any gents would like to play in the team tennis, please do not hesitate to contact our Mens Captain, Rupert Tillbrooke at [email protected]

Ladies Tennis

Ladies summer matches have nearly finished this season and the results to be given in next month’s newsletter. Ladies night has been a great success so thanks to everyone and Victoria again. We are looking forward to play in the winter vets (40’s, 50’s and 60’s). If any ladies would like to play in the team tennis, please contact our Ladies Captain, Sue Cove at [email protected]

Mixed tennis

As summer draws to a close we look towards Autumn matches in both Datchworth and East Herts leagues.

We have 3 teams in Datchworth which run every Saturday from September until Christmas. There is a possibility of running a 4th Datchworth team if there is anyone wishing to run a team please let [email protected] know ASAP otherwise we will run 3 teams and arrange teams with the captains based on capacity.

In the East Herts Mixed League, we have 6 teams this year, running from September through to March next year. These leagues run approximately 5/6 matches over the season.

If you were in these teams previously you will be automatically included and captains will reach out to you by early September.  There are some changes to captains this year – thank you as always to those that volunteer their time to run these teams, it’s very much appreciated and without them we would not be able to run as many teams.

Anyone who wants to be considered for mixed matches having not played before please let Kate know by emailing her at [email protected]

Junior Tennis

The Friday Junior Nights and the warm evenings have been enjoyed by many.  We have also welcomed local Junior Ukrainians to join in the fun and we provided English speaking lessons, kindly run by David Kendall, for their mums/carers while their juniors played tennis. The Junior Nights will reconvene after the Summer Holidays on Friday 9th September.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT – SUNDAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2022

Thank you to all who have signed up for the Junior Tournament which will take place on Sunday 18th September.  It will be a one day “round robin” championship, and BBQ food and drinks will be available throughout the day.

It is not too late to enter. The sign-up sheets are on the Junior board in the clubhouse. Alternatively, you can contact our Junior Captain, Ken Michie at [email protected]

With any event we rely on volunteers to make this happen, so if anybody can help by being an umpire or a line judge then we would really appreciate hearing from you.

During the summer break, we have allocated Court 1 on Fridays from 4:30pm to 8pm to be used by the Junior Ukrainians settling in Harpenden.

Socials

Our music and magic evening was a great success.  We were entertained by Tim Sutton who not only is a music genius but also a member of the INNER Magic Circle.  We are still meeting people in the high street saying how much they enjoyed the evening.

We have had a fantastic supper nights in July, cooked by Lynn Frankling, a Moroccan tagine dish.  The bar was open and members and their guest were able and have pre-dinner drinks outside.

In August we will be having our last Bank Holiday Tournament on Monday 29th.  The tournament is organised for Intermediate 16+ up to senior players and is a great way to meet and play with new people and have some fun! For more information, please contact let Jem Collier-Garrity know by emailing [email protected].

In September we have the following events planned:

Our last supper evening for 2022 on Thursday 15th September

Junior Tournament – Sunday 18th September (Reserve date 25th September)

Macmillan coffee morning – Friday/Saturday 23th/24th September

Wine tasting evening- Friday 30th September

The bacon rolls produced for our Saturday morning players has been well received after a hard game of tennis.  Ben collected £430 (before costs) towards his World Scout Jamboree to South Korea.  Ralph collected £155 towards his World challenge to Eswatini.  We wish both boys all the very best in their ventures next year.

Alice, who has been doing the tuck shop on junior nights, has managed to raise an amazing £1170 amount towards her trip which included baking cakes for the club finals day.   She has now left for her World Challenge expedition to Eswatini.  Look at her poster on the notice board.

If anyone is interested in doing the same during junior nights in September, please send an email to  [email protected]
