Elliswick LTC Newsletter – October 2022
Dear Members,
Welcome to our October Newsletter.
The Club has renewed its registration with the LTA for another year and has also renewed its liability insurance at the same time. The certificates are on the notice board.
AGM
The Club’s AGM will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday 26 November 2022. Refreshments (coffee/tea and biscuits) will be served from 10:00am. The formal Notice and papers will be circulated shortly. If you are not able to attend in person, please do appoint a proxy to ensure that we have a quorum. You can nominate your choice of proxy (which can be the Chairman) in an email to [email protected].
GROUNDS & CLUBHOUSE
- John Horsford and David Cowan have been co-opted by Nefyn to help manage maintenance at the club. A meeting was held in early October and Nefyn has provided them with a comprehensive briefing document.
- Abacus have undertaken a floodlights maintenance visit, also repaired the broken floodlight glass.
- The portable floodlight has been repaired.
- The winners boards have been updated.
- The heating systems have been set to holiday mode to reduce energy use, but will be reset prior to the Jazz evening. Given the expected increase in electricity costs, all members are kindly requested to help the club conserve heat in the clubhouse. All external doors should be shut on cold days.
- New electrical safety tests need to be arranged, as paperwork indicates that the last tests were in July and August 2019.
COURT 2
We would like to make you aware that there is a dip at the back of court 2. Please be careful when playing on court 2 and please advise any visitors/guests of the dip prior to playing.
MEMBERSHIP
- Thank you very much to all those of you who have sent email addresses and phone numbers for your partners and young adults in your family. Please check that all Elliswick members of your household over 18 have received this newsletter. If not, please contact Sally Radcliffe with their details by emailing ([email protected]).
- In January, all adults will receive their own invoice. If you are going to pay an invoice on behalf of a partner or young adult, they can simply forward their email to you for payment.
- The Committee has resolved to increase the number of junior members on the waiting list able to join the Club for 2023. This will improve the opportunities for youngsters keen to play tennis at the club.
- Our waiting list is currently 403, which is identical to this time last year!
TEAM TENNIS
Ladies Tennis
- The summer leagues have now ended and the 2022/23 winter matches for the Ladies vets are now underway. Many thanks to captains Jenny Sheridan, Anthea Doran, Victoria Aitchison and Georgie Smith for organising your teams. Here’s to another good winter season. Good luck ladies.
- Ladies mornings will continue throughout the winter months. Ladies evenings ended at the end of September and will recommence next Spring.
- Ladies Christmas Lunch: all lady members are invited to the ladies Christmas lunch on Tuesday 6th December from 12pm. For any newcomers, this is a bring-and-share lunch, £7 per person, any proceeds go to a local charity. The sign- up sheet will be posted on the notice board soon, so please do put your name down.
Mens Tennis
Summer Herts League Report:
1st Team: 6th (out of 7) position in Division 1B
2nd Team: 3rd (mid) position in Division 2A
3rd Team: 4th (out of 7) position in Division 3A
4th Team: 2nd position in Division 4A
5th Team: 6th (out of 7) position in Division 4B
Summer Hot Rackets Report:
1st Team: 7th position in Division 1A
2nd Team: 6th position in Division 5A
Both teams have used the younger players this year who played with good performance, but the opposition were strong and although the matches were close, we ultimately ended up on the losing side.
The 2022 winter vets matches have now been organised by captains in each age group category and the first match was played on Sunday 9th October with a good win.
Mixed Team
The Autumn/Winter Datchworth League is coming to an end with a couple more weeks of matches to play. It’s close with our 1st team and 2nd teams, both currently 2nd in their respective divisions. The 3rd team is currently top of its division! Good luck to all the teams for their remaining matches.
East Herts Mixed is underway with 6 teams playing. Our 1st and 2nd team are both in division 1 and the 3rd and 5th team are both in division 3 so there is some inter-club rivalry to come!
SOCIALS
We had our annual Elliswick quiz night couple of weeks ago. Carol Arnsby was our excellent quizmaster, entertaining over 40 people and working tirelessly during the evening to keep everything running smoothly. There was a fish and chips supper halfway through the evening from award winning Godfreys and prizes for the winning table at the end. Our thanks go to Carol for an excellent evening.
On Saturday November 12th we have a Jazz evening with Louisa (an Elliswick member) singing the night away with her band ‘Lulu and the Hullabaloos’. Bar open at 7.15 (cash only). Payment (cash only) payable on the night £10 per person. Music will start at 8pm. No food is provided but you are welcome to bring your own snacks and dips etc.
On Tuesday 15 November there is a trip to London to see ‘Choir of Man’.
JUNIORS
2022 Junior Winter League
We entered 4 teams in this league this year (U12 Boys, U14 Boys, U16 Boys, U16 Girls). Good luck to those who are playing in this league.
COACHING
2022 has been another busy year, with lots of children and adults enjoying coaching at Elliswick. Rupert and Dan have been working hard and doing a great job on court helping people improve their game and enjoy tennis. Holidays have been quieter than the last couple of years due to people going on holiday more as Covid-related restrictions have less of an impact on travel.
As a team, we are looking forward to 2023 to keeping a vibrant programming running at the club which in turns helps other areas in the club too.
PROMOTION:
Cookbook
A couple of our members (Heather Nye and Jacky Dodd) have produced a cookbook packed with delicious recipes that would make an excellent Christmas present. They cost £10 and all funds go towards a new parish community centre at St. John’s. They both would appreciate your support.
Kind Regards
Elliswick LTC Committee
