Elliswick LTC Newsletter – June 2021
Dear Members,
Welcome to our June Newsletter.
As per our recent email, the move to Step 4 of the Government Roadmap has been delayed until 19th July. As a result, the current Step 3 guidelines will apply until then.
Members Open Day – ELTC Summer Party
Due to the delay of the move to Step 4, we have to postpone our Members Open Day (ELTC Summer Party) which was scheduled for Saturday 3rd July. We will announce a new date in due course.
Wine Tasting Evening – Saturday 24th July 2021 at 7pm prompt
If restrictions permit, the wine tasting evening is now to be held Saturday 24th July 2021 at 7pm prompt. If anyone who signed up for the event cannot make this new date, please email our Social Secretary, Jeanette Rickerty at [email protected]. We now have 2 tables (of 8) available. If you wish to attend, please sign up in the clubhouse or email Jeanette at the above email address.
An Evening with Tim Sutton – 31st July 2021 at 7pm
We have planned another exciting social event at the end of July (31st July at 7pm). One of our musician members (Tim Sutton) is holding an evening of astonishment with music and magic. Ticket price is £7 per member, and all proceeds going to Keech Hospice. Please sign up early to avoid disappointment. If you wish to attend but are unable to come to the clubhouse to sign up, please contact our Social Secretary, Jeanette Rickerty at [email protected].
MENS NIGHTS
Our Tuesday Men’s night is no longer fixed fours but now back to the traditional mix-in format.
CAR PARKING – IMPORTANT REMINDER
Once again, a politely reminder: when parking in the neighbourhood, please ensure that you do not block/obstruct our neighbours’ driveways NOR park on the double yellow lines on the corner of Elliswick Road and Browning Road. Not only is this discourteous to them but it is also very dangerous to park so close to the corner. Please do not put yourselves and others in danger.
There is ample parking on Elliswick and Browning Road, particularly at the weekends and evenings when there are no restrictions (which apply from 10am-12pm on weekdays only).
ANNUAL TOURNAMENT- FINALS DAY 2nd OCTOBER 2021
Entry to the club tournament is now closed. Louise Behan, Eric Rovick, Victoria Aitchison and Rupert Tillbrooke met to do the draw which will be issued to all members on 2nd July 2021. The tournament commencement date is 3rd July 2021.
All players are to ensure that each round is to be played by the dates set out on the draw sheets. Any matches that fall outside these dates will be decided by a coin toss unless there are extenuating circumstances which are to be agreed beforehand with the Tournament secretary. If players are having difficulties arranging matches then please do let Louise Behan know at [email protected] at the earliest opportunity.
Good luck to all players and no doubt this will be another exciting club championship.
TEAM TENNIS
Mens Team
The men’s teams have started competing in their respective leagues. In the hot rackets we have several older juniors/intermediates representing the club which is great to see, some even playing in the Herts league fixtures too.
The Club tournament seems to have a decent uptake in both the singles, doubles and mixed.
Ladies Team
The ladies are playing their matches and enjoying them (mostly!) We are finding some clubs aren’t quite as invested this year (particularly in Hot Rackets) due to the fact that nothing is being recorded however bringing back the competitive element has been enjoyed by our ladies. The Herts League is playing towards a Cup so those entered are more invested to win their matches and have done well so far.
The Ladies Friendlies are being enjoyed thanks to Lynn’s organisation and ladies nights are being well attended.
Mixed Team
Mixed matches (Datchworth and Mixed Friendlies) are underway. We are still looking for players to play in the mixed friendlies league, so if you are interested, please do not hesitate to register your interest by emailing Andree Haxton at [email protected].
This league consists of friendly matches against other clubs in the area and is a good opportunity for any members who wish to play a match in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
GROUNDS & CLUBHOUSE
- The back door to the clubhouse has been replaced as the wind caught the old one and broke it.
- The faulty floodlight mast has been repaired, and rewiring of the mast nearest the clubhouse has been partially successful. We will attempt to fix the remaining light ourselves.
- There has been some dialogue with the planning people about our application for replacement lights on courts 5 and 6. Hopefully all will be resolved soon. It is out of our hands for the moment.
- We have had some issues with the clubhouse drains which are now resolved.
- We are painting our side of the fence by the entrance.
JUNIORS
Summer junior leagues are going well.
We are hoping to restart the Junior nights after the 19th of July. The first session is from 4pm to 6pm, for the primary school members. Parents will need to be on side during this time. We will need parents to volunteer from 6pm to 8pm, to supervise the secondary school members. If any members would like to volunteer to run the tuck shop during the junior nights, please contact Andree Haxton at [email protected].
JUNIOR TOURNAMENT – SUNDAY 19th SEPTEMBER 2021
Entries for the Junior Tournament are now open and will close at the end of July. Please sign up in the clubhouse or email our Junior Captain, Ken Mitchie at [email protected].
Assuming no government restrictions on gatherings, the Junior Tournament is to be held on 19th September.
We will need volunteers to help out on the day with umpiring and organisation. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact our Junior Captain, Ken Mitchie at [email protected].

CHARITY BIKE RIDE FOR RAINBOW HOSPICE
It is not too late to sponsor Steve Hall, Tony Ward and their friends who are undertaking an epic cycle journey from Lands End to John O’Groats (LeJoG) in aid of Rainbows Hospice for children. LeJoG is over 1,000 miles (or Harpenden to Frankfurt…and back!) and 40,000 ft of climbing (ie1.3x Everest!) over 14 consecutive days.
If you’re inclined to sponsor them (any donation greatly received to help them pedal their way through the pain!) the link to the JustGiving site is https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/codgers-lejogers
Kind Regards
