Elliswick LTC Newsletter – July 2021
Dear Members,
Welcome to our July Newsletter.
We hope that you are having a good summer and have managed to make use of our courts and the clubhouse which have now fully reopened. We have some exciting news to share with you.
MEMBERS OPEN DAY – ELTC SUMMER PARTY– Saturday 28th August 2021
Due to the delay of the move to Step 4, our Members Open Day (ELTC Summer Party) is now going to be held on Saturday the 28th August 2021. It will start from 10am with coffee/tea and pastries, followed by lunch with a welcome drink and entertainment (live band). This event is open to all members and is free of charge, to thank you for your patience and support during Covid-19 restrictions. If you wish to attend this event, please contact our Social Secretary, Jeanette Rickerty at [email protected], so that we know how many people to cater for. We hope to see most of you then.
CLUB TOURNAMENT
To those who have entered to play in the club tournament, please ensure that, by now, you have played and completed your first round.
The second-round deadlines are as below:
- Ladies singles – 3rd September
- Ladies doubles – 3rd September
- Men’s singles – 28th August
- Mixed doubles – 28th August
- Men’s doubles – 28th August
Please do try to play them as soon as possible to avoid any holiday travel plans.
If players are having difficulties arranging matches, then please do let Louise Behan know at [email protected] at the earliest opportunity.
JUNIOR TOURNAMENT – SUNDAY 19th SEPTEMBER 2021
Entries for the Junior Tournament are now open. Closing date for entries is 15th August 2021. Please sign up in the clubhouse or email our Junior Captain, Ken Mitchie, at [email protected].
BANK HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT – 30th AUGUST 2021
Our next Bank Holiday Tournament is to be held on Monday the 30th August 2021. If you would like to enter this fun and friendly tournament, please let Jem Collier-Garrity know by Monday 23rd August by emailing him at [email protected]
GROUNDS & CLUBHOUSE
With the opening up of the clubhouse we have also put out the benches and reinstalled the net winders and score counters. Please get back into the habit of checking and adjusting the net before you play.
We have managed to replace a defective bulb in one of the floodlights ourselves which is a great step for us to know that we can do it without calling in specialists.
There have been delays with our planning application for the replacement lights, hopefully to be resolved soon. It is out of our hands for the moment.
TEAM TENNIS
If you wish to participate in team tennis this autumn/winter please do not hesitate to register your interest by contacting our respective Team Captains, as follows:
Mens Captain: Rupert Tillbrooke at [email protected] or 07789811097
Ladies Captain: Victoria Aitchison at [email protected] or 07429581034
Mixed Captain: Kate Curson at [email protected]
MENS TENNIS
The men’s teams have almost completed their matches in Herts league. Thank you to all that have played so far.
It’s been good to see a few newer members play in the teams this year as well as some older juniors being given some adult match experience.
Thanks to Dougie for organising men’s night earlier in the year, it’s now gone back to a mix in format and has good numbers attending.
LADIES TENNIS
There are a few outstanding matches which will hopefully be rearranged for the remainder of the ladies summer season for both Herts League and Hot Rackets.
There are a couple of ladies friendlies still outstanding and ladies nights are still running with arranged 4’s.
Many thanks to all the ladies who have played throughout these trying times!
MIXED TEAM TENNIS
Mixed friendly Datchworth comes to an end for summer with our 3 teams having some good wins. Focus now moves to autumn Datchworth and the Mixed Herts League both starting in September. We have some captain vacancies so if you would like to volunteer to captain, please do get in touch with [email protected] ASAP. The number of team entries are reliant on having captains in place to full-fill duties such as: choosing your team (from names provided), liaising with the opposition, inputting the scores online and rearranging fixtures where necessary, supported by Kate.
If you would like to play in mixed autumn matches please also contact Kate.
CLUB SOCIALS – DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
We had two fabulous social events since we reopened our clubhouse. Thank you to the amazing duo, Alison and Barry Austin, who hosted the wine tasting evening and the super talented Tim Sutton, who held a charity night with Magic and Music evening. Tim managed to raise £669.50 for Keech Hospice. Both events were very well attended and truly magical, and everybody really enjoyed the events.

LOST PROPERTY BOX
The above has now over flowed. Please collect your belongings by Thursday the 13th August. Anything left by then will be donated to our local charity.
HARPENDEN’S (FIRST) JIGSAW FESTIVAL
Some of our members are organising the above, which takes place on 27, 28 and 30 August at High Street Methodist Church, between 9am and 6pm each day. There will be over 1000 completed jigsaws on show, some by our members, to view and, if you like buy at low prices. Refreshments available too. The proceeds will be split 50:50 between two local charities, Azalea and Workaid. Entry fee is £2. For more info, see website harpendenjigsawfestival.co.uk and Facebook page (Harpenden Jigsaw Festival). Please come and support if you can.
MATHS CARD GAMES
One of our members would like to introduce his Maths card games for KS1 and KS2 children by Sheridan Games.
They have a Maths shape game DECAGON for KS1+ (but also covers parallel and perpendicular lines for KS2 revision). In DECAGON, you have to beat the last card played and dodge wild cards – it’s really fun and VERY competitive! There’s also MATHS IT! TRUMPS for KS2 children where you beat opponents’ cards based on rounding, factors and whether it’s a prime or square number.
The Maths games are designed to boost Maths reasoning and thinking skills. They are great for Maths vocab! To buy online, visit www.sheridangames.co.uk.
Finally, a big thank-you from Steve Hall & Tony Ward following the successful completion of their Lands’ End to John O’Groats cycle ride. The 980 mile 14 day ride took in many wonderful sights including St Michael’s Mount, the Clifton Suspension bridge, Chepstow, Ludlow, Penrith, Edinburgh and the Cairngorms before finally arriving at John O’Groats. They also managed to see a number of friends and family members along the route, some they hadn’t seen for over a year due to the various lockdowns! In addition, they also raised nearly £7,000 for their chosen charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and would like to thank the many Elliswick members who supported them in undertaking this challenge. More photos of their trip may be found on their Instagram site, Codgerslejogers, and their JustGiving site https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/codgers-lejogers. Steve & Tony.
Kind Regards
Elliswick LTC Committee
