Elliswick LTC Newsletter – June 2022
Dear Members,
Welcome to our June Newsletter. What a month it has been. We have been blessed with fine weather so far, and we have held various successful events this month. The latest was the very successful Finals Day which was held on Saturday the 25th June. The day was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, who helped to make the day run so smoothly. And thank you very much to Dave Watkinson who has been working very hard to create a peaceful little oasis in the centre of Harpenden for all members to enjoy.
ANNUAL TOURNAMENT- FINALS DAY 25TH JUNE 2022 RESULTS

Lost Property Boxes
Please look through the lost property boxes (clothing, racquets, water bottles) in the clubhouse as the boxes will be emptied at the end of next week and the contents will be given to a local charity.
Hanging Baskets in the Garden
It would be great if you could help with watering the flowers in the hanging baskets at the front of the clubhouse if they look dry.
Club House Keeping
May we remind you not to leave left over match food in the clubhouse and please help out by taking your rubbish home if possible as the bins in the clubhouse are getting congested.
TEAM TENNIS
Mens Team
The men’s teams have started competing in their respective leagues. In the hot rackets we have several older juniors/intermediates representing the club, which is great to see, some even playing in the Herts League fixtures too.
Ladies Team
The ladies are playing their matches in the Herts Leagues and Hot Rackets, and getting good results so far – well done all. We would also like to announce the great wins for the over 40s and 50s winter league, so Congratulations to all involved and thanks again to the Captains for organising the matches.
The Ladies Friendlies are being enjoyed thanks to Lynn’s organisation. Ladies mornings and Ladies nights are being well attended and it’s lovely to see some of our new lady members joining in.
Mixed Team
The Datchworth Summer League is coming to an end in July with some good results coming through for the teams. The Mid-Herts Mixed is still underway and some junior players have played in the matches with good results so far.
As we look towards late summer, the Autumn Datchworth matches start in September of which we are looking to enter 3 teams alongside 6 teams for East Herts Winter Mixed.
JUNIORS
Well done to all Juniors who have played in the summer leagues which are now drawing to a close. Thanks to the all the parents who have organised the teams.
We have welcomed the Ukrainian Juniors settling in Harpenden to play tennis at our club for free on Junior Nights. Our thanks to our wonderful coaches, their helpers from the Development Squads and our friendly members who made them very welcome and helped them to enjoy their tennis. Any racket/tennis clothing donations would be greatly received.
The last junior night is on Friday 22nd July. There will be no junior nights during the summer holiday. The Junior nights will restart on the 9th September. A snack shop is open offering hot dogs, pizzas and sweet snacks. The bar is also open for adults.
JUNIOR TOURNAMENT – SUNDAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2022
The Junior Tournament will take place on Sunday 18th September with a reserve date (in case of bad weather) of Sunday 25th September. Please sign up before the deadline of 28th August 2022 as we need time to organise the event and matches. The sign-up sheets are on the Junior board in the clubhouse. Alternatively, you can contact our Junior Captain, Ken Michie at [email protected]
Matches will be played both in the morning and in the afternoon. All players must therefore be available to play their matches in both the morning and the afternoon, otherwise they may default the title. Players wishing to play in the tournament must ensure they are available to play on both days (the 18th and/or the 25th September 2022).
We are looking for willing volunteers to help with catering and score the games as there are so many games played throughout the day. Please contact Ken Michie directly if you are able to help out. Of course, the bar will be open, and BBQ and buffet will be available on the day.

Bank Holiday Tournament
Our Jubilee tournament was another success with players enjoying a barbecue afterwards.
Supper night
Thanks go to Chris Rice and Gill Parks for producing a lovely supper a few weeks ago. Please join us for our next one on July 14th, now the earlier time of 7.30pm.
All members and their guests are invited – just add your name to the list which will be on the notice board next week. We have someone to produce the dessert but still need someone to do the main course. Please let Jeanette Rickerty know asap if you can do this, by emailing her at [email protected]
Tim Sutton’s music and magic evening
Tim’s varied program for the evening entertained over 40 guests. Thank you, Tim, for making it such a great social evening which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
Ladies morning
A special morning was arranged by Jeanette Rickerty and Sally Radcliffe to encourage more ladies to join us on our Tuesday ladies morning. Rachel (a qualified fitness instructor – details regarding her classes can be obtained from Sally) was invited to do a 15/20 warmup stretch class. Then we played tennis and coffee and cake was provided for 20 ladies.
