Elliswick LTC Newsletter – June 2019

Dear Members,

Welcome to our June Newsletter. What a month it has been.  We have been blessed with fine weather so far, and we have had various successful events this month. The latest was the very successful Finals Day which was held on Saturday the 29th June. The day was enjoyed by all. Thank you to those who helped to make the day run so smoothly.

A few reminders:

Tennis Ball Etiquette

There should be 7 trays of balls on the shelf just inside the clubhouse door for use by members. Please only take only one tray of balls onto each court and remember to return it back to the clubhouse so it can be used again by other members. Please only put the club balls (Slazenger Wimbledon) back into the trays as the other brands are used for coaching. Please do not take any tins of match balls from on top of the chest inside the clubhouse unless they are to be used for the match they are indicated for (recently two tins of match balls just disappeared with the consequent inconvenience for players and embarrassment for the club). Balls are changed when they are judged to need changing by those in charge of the balls. If you believe that the balls need to be changed, please email [email protected]. Thanks for minding these few simple rules.

Lost Property Boxes

Please look through the lost property boxes (clothing, racquets, water bottles) in the clubhouse as the boxes will be emptied at the end of this week.

Hanging Baskets in the Garden

It would be great if you could help with watering the flowers in hanging baskets if they look dry.

Clubhouse Keeping

May we remind you not to keep food in the fridge for a long time and please help out by taking your rubbish home if possible as the bins in the clubhouse are getting congested.

Grounds

We are having some issues with the new acoustic doors. We are getting the manufacturers in to fix them as soon as we can. Please do not move them unless you have been authorised and trained to do so.

We have met with Abacus about two issues with the Floodlights, firstly to implement a maintenance contract and secondly to see what options we might have to upgrade the lights, following on from work Tony Ward did last year. Nefyn is awaiting a proposal about ongoing maintenance from Abacus. The idea is to try and pre-empt some of the problems we have been experiencing.

The glass washer in the bar has been fixed.

Socials

SUPPER NIGHT – A very delicious June supper was cooked by Alison Gadd and Barrie Austin a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed by members. Our next supper is on Thursday 25th July. The bar will be open to all members but if you wish to eat you must put your name down on the list which will be posted about 10 days before on the notice board.

WINE TASTING – Many thanks to Alison and Barrie again, for a great wine tasting evening.  There was a combination of sparkling, white and red wines with accompanying food and everyone enjoyed the evening in our new spacious clubhouse.

CURRY NIGHT – despite the rain about 25 men came to our first curry night last week on men’s night.   It was so successful we plan to put it on the social calendar for next year and maybe do it again before the end of the summer season.   Many thanks to Andree for cooking and everyone who helped.

DINNER DANCE – unfortunately we have had to postpone our dinner dance as many members said they were on holiday in July.  We are now hoping to arrange it for March /April next year when people should be more available.  We will let you know as soon as the date has been arranged

Juniors

JUNIOR NIGHT
The Young Juniors is structured play with the coaches (4:30 to 6pm), while the later (6pm to 8pm) offers older Juniors (11+) the chance to play some matches or just to socialise and have fun with friends.  We have a few more weeks of the Summer Term with the last session on Friday 19th July.  Members are welcome.  A snack shop is open offering hot dogs and sweet snacks.

TOURNAMENT

The Junior Tournament will take place on Sunday 15th September with a reserve date (in case of bad weather) Sunday 22nd September.  If you can, please sign up before the deadline of 31st August as we need time to organise the event and matches.  The sign-up sheet is on the Junior board in the clubhouse. Alternatively, you can contact Deborah Temple at [email protected]

Volunteers – The day was a great success last year because we had great volunteers who helped score the games.  We are looking for willing volunteers this year to help score as there are so many games played throughout the day. Please contact Deborah directly.  Thanks in advance.
Of course the bar will be open and food will be available.

BOX LEAGUE

The box league is currently in progress.  Please see the league sheet on the Junior Board.  Good luck to all players.

FAMILY DAY

We will be hosting a fun and informal family day event for all members (players and non-players).  Date to be announced soon.  Juniors and adults will get a chance to play together.  Junior equipment and Junior Rules apply.
